Get On Base To Support Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Impact Lumberjacks Baseball to Raise Funds for Fatal Disease
The Impact Lumberjacks baseball club, a non-profit organization that strives to build responsibility, accountability and character among members through community service activities, is raising funds to cure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) one base at a time.
“The Lumberjacks’ endeavor is to provide quality and affordable team athletics for young athletes, “ said Vice President, Chris Hammer-Huber. “We created Impact Team Sports to encourage community service within our athletes and we are excited to join John Owen’s parents and supporters in the fight against DMD. Our main goal is not about raising money, it’s about the awareness to the community and our young players. We want them to always be thankful for their health and ability to play sports. JOA helps send that message loud and clear.”
Impact Team Sports has partnered with JOA through the program “On Base For Duchenne”, created by Chris Hammer-Huber and Impact President Matt Suhay. This program encourages sponsors to donate up to $1 per base throughout the season. Each player will go out into the community in hopes of making each base they reach this summer worth $1 towards derailing Duchenne.
Chris will also be collecting sponsors for the “On Base for Duchenne Player of the Game.” After each game, the player who reached base the most times will represent the “On Base For Duchenne Player of the Game.” At the end of the season The Impact Lumberjacks will add the total bases for each player and ask each player’s sponsors to donate that amount to JOA. The team estimates that sponsors will donate between $3.50 to $70 with sponsorship levels starting at a nickel per base and topping off at $1 per base.
The Lumberjacks players and families will also support JOA in other ways by participating in their annual Dodge Ball event as well as attending and volunteering at the JOA main event, Picnic in the Park.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (Duchenne) is a fatal progressive disorder that causes loss of muscle function and independence, affecting mainly young boys. John Owen’s Adventure Inc. (JOA) is dedicated to discovering a treatment, improving research and establishing education and awareness programs about DMD for all individuals who are affected by this disease. DMD is 100% fatal and typically only affects boys. A very tiny part of the boy’s X chromosome was deleted. This deletion makes it impossible for him to build muscles because the message ‘build dystrophin’ never gets to his brain. Eventually, all of the muscles in his body will breakdown making it impossible to walk, eat and breathe. Soon after that his little heart muscles will breakdown as well and we will be forced to say goodbye to him well before he has fully enjoyed his 20’s. One in 3,500 boys has DMD. JOA Moving Spirit Team Donates $20,000 for Pediatric Cardiac
Research
North Royalton, OH -- John Owen’s Adventure Inc., a local non-profit, designates $20,000 to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) for their Cardiac Initiative.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (Duchenne) is a fatal progressive disorder that causes loss of muscle function and independence, affecting mainly young boys. John Owen’s Adventure Inc. (JOA) is dedicated to discovering a treatment, improving research and establishing education and awareness programs about Duchenne for all individuals who are affected by this disease.
PPMD has committed more than $1 Million to cardiac research initiatives designed to increase the strength and function of the heart muscles. This research has the potential to give these boys a fighting chance of survival past their estimated life span of 19 years.
JOA Moving Spirit is a team of 60+ runners dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Duchenne research.
“Our runners knew each step they took at the Cleveland Rite Aid Marathon on 5.19.13 were to save lives. We are humbled and thrilled to be able to support PPMD and the Duchenne Community in trying to give our boys more time," said Jen Dumm, V.P. of JOA and half marathon runner.
"Knowing that the precious hearts of these boys will potentially be strengthened with this research makes the 16 weeks of intense training and the 600 miles, we ran collectively that day, feel like a breeze,” Dumm said. Duchenne is 100% fatal and typically only affect boys. A very tiny part of the boy’s X chromosome was deleted.
